# Data Residency - Azure OpenAI

## Understand how Azure OpenAI data residency works and how deployment regions affect data processing and compliance.

When you deploy a model in Microsoft Foundry, you choose a deployment type that determines:

- **Where your data is processed** (global, data zone, or single region)
- How you pay (pay-per-token or reserved capacity)
- Performance characteristics (latency variance, throughput limits)

By default, Azure uses **Global Standard deployments**, which means your data is not tied to the region you chose. It can be processed in **any Azure region worldwide**, including the US.

To ensure your data stays within the EU for storage and processing, select one of the deployment types that does not contain **global**, like **Data Zone Standard**. This ensures that your data stays within the same data zone as the Microsoft Foundry resource.

You can only choose this setting **when creating the deployment**. If you already have deployments, check their type. If they use **Global Standard** and that doesn’t meet your data residency requirements, you’ll need to **create new deployments with the correct type**.
